A few weeks back I was riding on the subway and a guy next to me was cursing and grumbling under his breath.
Not sure why, but I decided to respond to him.
Him: “Fucking disgusting city. You’re all disgusting.”
Me: “Hey man, what’s the problem”
He was stunned. Why was I talking to him. Didn’t I realize he was crazy?
Him: “This city is disgusting. You’re all horrible. Spread out everywhere. There’s nowhere to even sit on a subway.”
I looked around and there were plenty of seats. All middle seats. But no one had a bag up. No one had there legs up. Hell, no one was even taking up ANY extra space.
Me: “There are plenty of seats. Why not sit next to me? I’m over as far as I can go, and that lady is over as far as she can go. This is as much room as you’re ever going to get”
By this point I noticed people watching me. Because now I realized I was as crazy as the guy I was taking to.
Him: “I’m not sitting there!”
I stood up.
Me: “Take my seat. If that’ll make you happy, go ahead.”
Him: “I don’t want your seat!”
Me: “Then stop complaining and swearing in my ear”
Him: “Or what?”
Me: “I guess you’ll be miserable for the rest of your life.”
Him: “That’s right! I will be miserable.”
I sit back down.
Him: “What are you… happy?”
Me: “Yeah. I’m happy.”
The doors to the train open and he starts to step out, but first stops and says to the train…
Him: “You people are what make this city awful!”
Me: “Yeah… we make it awful.”
He got off the train.
I looked around and sound a bunch of faces looking at me like I was nuts.
They were correct.
